Consider Energy Star-Qualified Skylights For Your Next Remodeling Project
Energy Star-qualified skylights are being used to a greater degree in remodeling, as well as in new construction, for these applications that reduce energy bills.
As green building and remodeling practices become standard procedure, the use of more natural light and passive ventilation is here to stay.
Always high on homeowner remodeling wish lists, kitchens and bathrooms are logical candidates for daylighting and ventilation upgrades, according to Joe Patrick, senior product manager with VELUX America. “They, along with laundry rooms, have higher moisture and humidity levels than other areas of the home and are among the most popular locations for venting skylights,” he says. “And more natural light is always welcomed where clothes are being sorted by color.” (more…)

Creative Advertising Will Save A Few Interior Designers
In a business where tradition can squelch creative ways of doing things, it is often difficult to introduce fresh ideas, but the economy is encouraging experimentation. Designers who say they are doing well in the recession are taking risks and changing what has been a very conservative business. And while luxury items and services are the first to go in hard times, these new approaches are benefiting customers who are finding design more accessible and less expensive.
In a recent survey, the American Society of Interior Designers reported that 65 percent of its members said they were taking smaller projects than they once had, compared with 50 percent who said that in 2008. Of course, there have always been designers who offer relatively inexpensive services, but they haven’t been those whose work is shown in shelter magazines or shops frequented by wealthy customers. National Association of Realtors Propose FHA Funding Rules Changes

In a letter to new FHA commissioner David Stevens, the association asked that FHA align its requirements on owner-occupancy in condominiums with those of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac.
FHA recently adopted a series of amendments to its condo guidelines, one of which lowered the mandatory owner-occupancy ratio to 50 percent. In other words, FHA previously would not insure mortgages on purchases of units located in projects that were more than half investor-owned or rental. (more…)

A Convenient Guide To Landscaping
You can increase the value of your home without paying big bucks to a landscaper — or losing a weekend to a do-it-yourself job. The following simple tricks will beautify your yard now and boost your home’s curb appeal — and value — for years to come.
We all know we should water regularly through dry spells, but there’s another secret to greening up the lawn. Mow it to a height of at least three inches. This enables the grass to retain more moisture by keeping the soil shaded and cooler, which allows the roots to grow deeper, so they can find their own water.
In fall, feed the lawn with a fall fertilizer blend (about $40 for a half-acre lot), which will improve the turf’s water-seeking abilities next year. Also, thanks to trees getting larger (or being pruned), your sun exposure may have changed. Sprinkle a sun-and-shade seed mix ($5) over problem areas. (more…)
